October Favorites 2016

Can you believe October is coming to an end? I'm here to chat with you about some things I loved this past month- I'd love to hear what you've been up to in the comments! Pour yourself a nice cup of tea, take a deep breath, and let's take a minute to reflect on the wonderful things we enjoyed in October :)

October seems to be a popular month to get sick in my house, and this year was no exception. I was sick (and still am) all month with varying degrees of bronchitis/ chest congestion, and one of my daughters has been keeping pace with me most of the month as well. Being congested for weeks on end definitely made my already-loved homemade chai tea an even bigger hit this month! Not only is it soothing for my throat (and spirit) to drink, but when it's simmering on the stove it makes a perfect vaporizer and scent dispenser all in one! My daughter and I stood over that pot many a time and I LOVED it. Chai tea is not as hard to make at home as you might think- I shared my recipe recently so go check it out and try it for yourself if you're interested:

I found these fun, glittery fall leaves at the Dollar Tree recently and, as suspected, my students loved them! I used them to show melodic contour with a song about fall leaves and it was a hit! Those little things that add a little sparkle to the lesson can make all the difference in attention and retention, especially at this time of year (find the songs I used and other lesson ideas in these curriculum sets). The Dollar Tree seems to be really stepping up its game- at least the one near me- and I've been having pretty good luck with little seasonal finds like these. Definitely a keeper!

I finally started teaching ukuleles for the first time EVER this month and it was so exciting! I got ukuleles through a donorschoose project funded this past summer, and I'm using them with my 6th graders as part of the chord progression composition project I have been doing with them each year. So far we are all loving it!

I found some wonderful music education blog posts this month! Take a few minutes to read through them- you'll find some great ideas you'll want to save, I guarantee :)

I hope you've all had a wonderful month! What were your favorite things this October? Let's here them in the comments! Want more? Subscribe right here to the Organized Chaos newsletter for more ideas and resources for home and school.

September favorites 2016

Time for another monthly favorites post! This month has flown by for sure, and I have had plenty of moments of feeling completely overwhelmed, but it has been good to start settling back into the groove of things.

My first favorite of the month is the new sticker books that came out recently at Michaels:

I can't even, you guys. They came out with new books for fall, Thanksgiving, Halloween, winter, and Christmas. Several of them are reboots of my favorites from last year, but there were a bunch of new ones as well- the picture above is of what I got after MUCH restraint. If you want to see how I'm already using them in my planner, head on over to my Instagram account. If you're interested in seeing more planner stuff (and lots of other random-ness), then be sure to follow! I post most of my planner spreads over there.

My next favorite this month is my new monthly lesson planning routine. Many of you know that I started sending out an overview of the skills and concepts I am covering in each K-6 grade for the upcoming month as a freebie in my monthly newsletter this year (click here if you want to sign up). I've been mapping my yearly plans for each grade for years (read more about that process here), but I've never really typed anything up formally in advance in a way that is understandable to others before. Besides the newsletter overview, I've also been typing up more detailed plans for all of the lesson activities I'll be doing, with accompanying visuals, worksheets, and resources, in my store as well.

I know I sound like a commercial right now but what I'm trying to say is this process of typing everything up and creating all of the visuals and printables in advance has been amazing for my teaching! My weekly lesson planning is a breeze now, because everything I need is organized in one place. I'm so glad I've started doing this, and I am happy to have this resource that I can continue to add to and modify each year as well. I highly recommend blocking out some time each month to do this- it's a lot of work but it pays off in the day-to-day big time! Check out my curriculum bundle here to see how I've been putting everything together:

Another favorite: my TOMS! I know I'm a little late to the party but I got my first pair last spring when they came out with the rainbow glittery music ones. They are seriously my perfect shoe in every way imaginable. So when they had a big sale recently I got myself another (more grown-up looking) pair, and they are my go-to shoes for teaching and pretty much everything else! They are so comfy and I love the fun patterns :)

Time for some of my favorite music education blog posts! There were a lot of great ones this month! Check out the posts by clicking on the pictures below:

I hope you all have had a wonderful September and are looking forward to a wonderful October! It's fall y'all! :) What things have you been enjoying this past month? I'd love to hear about them in the comments below :)

Fermata Friday: new format

After hosting the Fermata Fridays link-up each Friday on my blog for over a year, I've decided to change the format of how I run it. Starting this week, I will no longer host the link-up in a weekly blog post, but I will continue to feature a post each Friday on Facebook and Pinterest. I will also be sharing a monthly round-up of my favorite things, including the featured posts from Fermata Fridays, on my blog.

To be considered for a Fermata Fridays feature, you can submit your blog post any time through the submission form that I now have in my sidebar. Look for and click on the Fermata Fridays button in my sidebar to be taken to the form:

As before, I ask that you limit your submissions to blog posts that are primarily focused on ideas rather than the promotion of a paid product. Otherwise, I invite you to submit any blog post, old or new, that is related to music education! The beauty of this system is that you are welcome to submit as many posts as you like in one sitting and I will consider them for feature whenever I can. I will select one blog post to be featured each Friday on my Facebook page and will also be pinning the post to my Fermata Fridays board, and each month I will include all of the blog posts from that month in my monthly favorites blog post.

I hope bloggers and readers alike enjoy this new format. I think it will help more people to see all of the awesome blog posts out there while also making it easier to sift through my posts on my blog. I look forward to reading all of the amazing posts- thank you for submitting and reading! If you have any questions please leave it in the comments below or email me (link in my blog header).

Fermata Friday: August 12, 2016

Welcome to this week's installment of my weekly linky party, Fermata Fridays! For a few reasons, I have decided that this will be the final installment of Fermata Fridays on my blog: starting next week I will be inviting people to share their blog posts on social media and featuring posts that way. I think the change in format will allow me to continue sharing awesome posts from other blogs while getting rid of some of that extra bulk that hosting a weekly linky adds to my blog. If you aren't already be sure to follow my Facebook page to stay updated on future Fermata Fridays!

This is a chance for music education bloggers to share blog posts with readers and bloggers alike, so we can all mingle and learn from each other. Readers, you are going to love all of the awesome blog posts that are out there- I hope you discover some new blogs to follow and get some new inspiration for your teaching! Bloggers, make sure you read the directions carefully before linking up to make sure we keep the party fun for everyone. Thanks! :)

Here are the rules for the linky party:

1. Add the linky image to your blog post, blog sidebar, linky party roundup, or other similar location on your blog and link it back to the party. Copy and paste the code for this button, or use the image above and link to the label "Fermata Fridays".

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://caldwellorganizedchaos.blogspot.com/search/label/Fermata%20Fridays"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD5AShYQiAk-NC2PM5EMpGrK31c3bfaUO7qbi6cCVXVIW-ySfO3xfYbJOj0WAbRcl11hVrCCWLIiqFjqs2cV8Yu8Zw-HEdtId-jZRpwv-W6p9VwBWQZvreaxjOfVBwlw-YdvMr_BbR3M0/s1600/fermata+friday+button.jpg" /></a></div><br />

2. Add up to two blog post links to the linky. The posts can be old or new (but no posts that have already been linked up to Fermata Fridays in the past), on any topic related to music teaching, but must not be primarily featuring a product. It's fine to have a link to a relevant product within a post, but that should not be the primary focus of the post. I reserve the right to delete a link that is too product-focused. If you're not sure, just ask! :)

3. Leave a thoughtful comment on at least two other links, including the one right before yours. Add #fermatafridays to your comment so bloggers know where you found them!

4. Pin at least one post to one of your Pinterest boards.

5. Make sure you are following me on Pinterest. I will be pinning every link to the Fermata Fridays board each week.

6. Make sure you are following me on Facebook and check back next Friday- I will be featuring one of the links from the previous week's linky on my Facebook page each Friday!
